CRR has been instrumental in bringing shingle recycling to other areas of the country. We are looking forward to ensuring shingles are recycled throughout the United States of America. With an estimated 11-18 million tons of tear-off shingles generated annually in our country, CRR considers it our duty to assist in capturing this commodity for recycling.
CRR research and development is vigorously seeking alternative uses beyond hot mix asphalt for shingle recycling. Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) has potential for several outlets.
- Engineered fuel that provides comparable btu value to mid-grade coal with less harmful emissions. This new alternative fuel can be utilized by power producers and heavy energy users.
- Pyrolysis, a process that heats shingles in an oxygen free environment that produces gas, oil and char. The gas is used to operate the system, the oil is refined for resale use and the char has a variety of end markets.
- Development of a process that will break down the shingle separating the oil from the aggregates and fibers. This oil provides a green fuel benefit to municipal power generation plants, on-site power generation, farmers and small trucking fleets.
- "Harmonite" is a process whereby 100% of the shingle is reduced to a fine powder that can be easily transformed into a liquid application. This product is an excellent alternative to current driveway sealant, crack filler and micro-sealers used for overlay. Many of these products of yesterday have been found to contain serious carcinogens that are not an issue with the 'Harmonite' product lines.
